Mutro MAX Adult Recipe

Dog Food tested: Beef Meal and Rice Recipe
When times are hard one of the areas that seem to get cut is pet food. And here at the kennels it’s no different. With the increase in rescues along with slower turnover of dogs has forced us to tighten our belt. Since dog food is the major expense here at the kennels, guess what. That’s right we went looking for an alternate food to feed. No, that does not mean we have stopped using the top of the line dog food. NO,It just means that we are using a B grade or better food were appropriate.
We had set several conditions that the dog food had to meet. They are:
1. reasonable priced with good value.
2. contain little or no undesirables (for a list of 6 no-no’s in dog food) click here
3. be readily available.
We found several brands that meet this criteria.

Again realize unlike Life’s Abundance and Flint River which are delivered fresh to your door, These dog foods are subject to the modern day transportation system and can be purchased from your local retail stores. Like Pets Mart, Wal Mart, K-mart etc.

The following dog food has been fed in the kennels as well as the house.
It’s “Nutro MAX” (Natural Nutrition/Maximum Health, “select natural ingredients with added vitamins and minerals deliver 100% complete and balanced nutrition for active adult dogs”)

The bag lists the following.
1. The Natural Difference—Natural ingredients, fortified with vitamins and minerals
2. Real Beef Protein—The #1 ingredient in MAX is beef meal, which is made from real beef
3. More digestible, less cleanup—ingredients are highly digestible, means less waste
4. Guaranteed Great Taste—They use what is called their FlovorMAX system
5. Shiny Coat, Less shedding—Max helps reduce dry, flaky skin and shedding
6. The economy of quality foods—Many owners find highly digestible Max cost only pennies per day more to feed

They List their guaranteed Analysis at: 26% crude protein, 16% crude fat and 14% crude fiber with 10% moisture

Now what did we find and what were our results in feeding “Nutro MAX”?
1. The dogs do eat it and there is little spill and uneaten waste on the floor of kennels
2. Their is less waste (stool) to be picked up from kennels and exercise yards
3. It does seem to nutritionally satisfy the dogs
4. And they like the Beef and Rice better then the chicken
5. Most important, on the plus side, is the fact it does what the bag claims

Now what did we find wrong?
1. Found after useing it for a while, Coats had less of a shine.
2 It does contain ground whole wheat, corn gluten meal
3. Most important of all is the fact there is no control over storage and delivery of products after manufacture. For all you know that bag of food you just bought could have been sitting for months in a hot trailer waiting to be shipped. So now what was 26% protein when it left the factory is now (who knows what) and rancid (not fit to eat). Has Happened.

Would I recommend this dog food? I guess it comes down to price. If I could afford a higher grade dog food then I would feed that. However, if it’s in you price range then I would use it. But always keeping in mind the several negative factors above.
